DESCRIPTION:(INDIANAPOLIS) The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced toda
y that 27 members of the Lifelong Arts 2023 Artist Training Cohort have ap
plied for and received fellowship funding to support arts learning experie
nces for older adults in a Hoosier community.\n\nLifelong Arts Indiana\, a
partnership between the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration
(FSSA) Division of Aging and the Indiana Arts Commission is a learning op
portunity for artists and aging services providers to develop their skills
in providing creative experiences for older adults. The program equip s p
articipants with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide impactful c
reative experiences for older adults\, ages sixty-five and older\, and pro
vides access to the funds to help make it happen.\n\nThe Lifelong Arts 202
3 Artist Training Cohort are each receiving a fellowship of $3\,500 that w
ill support Indiana’s older adults. In 2023\, the cohort took part in a
three-day training course\, facilitated by Lifetime Arts\, in which cohort
members learned and explored best practices and strategies for developing
effective\, sequential\, arts learning experiences for older adults. Foll
owing the 2023 training\, participants launched pilot programming for olde
r adults in their communities. This fellowship funding will allow particip
ants to deepen their work and solidify their practice in service to older
adults.\n\n\nArtist Cara Schmitt of Munster will offer eight class session
s in which students will learn fundamental drawing techniques while explor
ing self-expression through a series of both abstract and figurative creat
ive prompts\, to be done in the pages of a provided art journal. Each sess
ion will provide new artistic challenges while building skills and confide
nce. Students will work in a circle and are encouraged to share both suppl
ies and insights. \n\nElijah Stephen of Indianapolis will organize the "Rh
ythm of Life" program\, a vibrant and engaging creative aging initiative c
entered around the power of drumming and drum circles. Over six enriching
sessions\, older adults will delve into the world of percussion\, learning
various drumming techniques and rhythms from diverse cultures. The progra
m will culminate in a grand drum circle event where participants will show
case their newfound rhythmic talents and celebrate the joy of making music
together.\n\nThe 27 fellowship recipients will be hosting their programmi
ng in Indiana communities between January 2\, 2025\, and December 30\, 202
 5. Read more about each of the fellowship projects taking place. \n\n\n \n
