DESCRIPTION:Court of Appeals of Indiana Senior Judge Michael P. Barnes died
  last evening after a long\, courageous battle with cancer. He was 72 year
 s old.\n\nJudge Barnes was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Indiana in
  May 2000 after long service as the St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney
 . He was retained on the Court by election in 2000 and 2012. Judge Barnes 
 retired from the Court on June 15\, 2018 and was appointed by the Indiana 
 Supreme Court to serve as a Senior Judge for the Court of Appeals.\n\nJudg
 e Barnes was born and raised in rural Illinois. He earned a B.A. in histor
 y at St. Ambrose College in Davenport\, Iowa in 1970 and received his J.D.
  in 1973 from the University of Notre Dame Law School.\n\n“Judge Barnes 
 lived an exemplary life and was simply an all-around wonderful person\,”
  Court of Appeals Chief Judge Bradford said. “He was dedicated to public
  service\, serving as St. Joseph Prosecuting Attorney for 20 years and a j
 udge on the Court of Appeals for another 20 years.”\n\nVoters chose him 
 in 1978 to be the St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney\, an office he he
 ld for 20 years over five elections. While prosecutor\, he oversaw a staff
  of 65 and spearheaded development of the CASIE Center for child victims o
 f physical and/or sexual abuse\, which continues to serve the community. J
 udge Barnes also created a domestic and family violence unit in the Prosec
 utor’s office and launched a pretrial diversion program for nonviolent m
 isdemeanor offenders that served as a model for successful state legislati
 on.\n\nJudge Barnes received numerous awards for his victim advocacy and s
 upported a wide range of community organizations\, especially those servin
 g vulnerable populations.\n\nAmong his many professional affiliations\, Ju
 dge Barnes was a member of the Indiana Bar Foundation\, the St. Joseph Cou
 nty Bar Association\, the Indiana State Bar Association\, and the Illinois
  State Bar Association.\n\n“Judge Barnes was a mentor to many judges and
  lawyers\, including myself\,” Chief Judge Bradford said. “He was also
  dedicated to his wife\, children\, and grandchildren. He will be sadly mi
 ssed\, but we will honor him appropriately.”\n\nJudge Barnes lived in So
 uth Bend with his widow\, Alberta Edwards Barnes\, and was an avid basebal
 l fan and reader.\n\nHis Court of Appeals biography is available on the Co

 rt of Appeals of Indiana\n\nAs the second-highest court in Indiana\, the C
 ourt of Appeals hears appeals from the state’s trial courts and some sta
 te agencies. The Court hears cases only in three-judge panels\, and all pa
 nels have statewide jurisdiction and rotate three times per year. Cases ar
 e randomly assigned. The 15 members of the Court issue approximately 2\,00
 0 written opinions each year. A decision of the Court of Appeals of Indian
 a is final unless granted further review by the Indiana Supreme Court.
