About this Event
Wish your town a happy birthday on July 11! The Town of Clermont was incorporated in 1903 after the Marion County Board of Commissioners was petitioned to hold an election. The election took place on July 7, 1903, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Merritt McConaha’s barber shop. Twenty-four ballots were cast for incorporation, and 19 were cast against it, leaving a majority of 5 in favor of Clermont becoming a town. Four days later, the county commissioners declared the territory a new town. The first town officials (elected afterward) were James M. Robey, Muratt Brown, Vincent K. Johnson (trustees), Lee R. Appleget (clerk), John T. Jones (treasurer), and Bert L. Appleget (marshal).
