DESCRIPTION:With Memorial Day weekend nearly here\, Indiana Conservation Of
ficers remind Hoosiers to make water safety a priority throughout the summ
er.\n\n“We urge everyone to recognize the danger water poses\,” said C
apt. Jet Quillen. \n\nHere are some basic water safety tips:\n\nDiscuss th
e dangers of water with your family and loved ones before going out.Tell s
omeone where you are going and when you will return.Go with a buddy.Stay a
 way from flooded or fast-moving waterways.Wear a life jacket.Keep a watchf
ul eye on children.Avoid alcohol. When you go boating\, boat safely by asse
ssing water levels before going out and monitor your speed. Reduce speed i
n unfamiliar areas and be aware of unusual water conditions\, especially c
ompared to the size and type of your boat. These guidelines can also help
prevent beach erosion.\n\nDesignate a sober boat operator. Alcohol consump
tion causes impaired balance\, blurred vision\, poor coordination\, impair
ed judgment\, and slower reaction time. Wave action\, sun exposure\, and w
ind can magnify these effects. It is illegal to operate a motorboat or per
sonal watercraft in Indiana while intoxicated due to alcohol or drugs. Ind
iana law defines intoxication as having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or
greater.\n\nEach life jacket should be United States Coast Guard approved\
, in good working condition\, and an appropriate size for the wearer. Toda
y’s inflatable life jackets allow mobility and flexibility for activitie
s like boating\, fishing or paddling\, and can be much cooler in warmer we
ather than older-style life jackets.\n\nTo learn more about boating educat
 ion and safety\, see on.IN.gov/boatered.
