About this Event
View mapFull Moons occur when the Moon is fully illuminated by the Sun, allowing viewers on Earth to see the full circle. It's typically the brightest night of the month. The New Moon is the darkest night of the month, when dark side of the Moon faces Earth. We're going on a hike on the darkest night of the month!
We will meet at the Park Office/Fire Tower Parking lot at 7:30pm to hike Trail 10. Please note Trail 10 should be considered very rugged in the dark and involves hiking from one of the highest elevations in the park to one of the lowest. The route is 2.2 miles and will take about two hours.
Red flashlights help us preserve night vision. We have some to lend out, but it is wise to bring your own if you have one.
Hike cancellation policy:
Hikes will be cancelled if there is lightning, temperatures below 0 degrees Farenheit, temperature indexes above 105 degrees Farenheit, or a wind advisory. If a hike is cancelled, gatehouses will be informed. The phone number for the North Gatehouse is 812-988-5230.
