DESCRIPTION:Indiana DNR has received reports of sick and dying songbirds fr
 om five counties. DNR is working with the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic
  Laboratory (IN ADDL) and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center to deter
 mine the birds’ cause of death.\n\nThe five counties are Monroe\, Clark\, J
 efferson\, LaGrange\, and Lake. \n\nThe affected songbirds showed neurologi
 cal signs of illness as well as eye swelling and crusty discharge. \n\n“Sev
 eral species are being affected\,” said Allisyn-Marie Gillet\, DNR ornithol
 ogist\, “including blue jay\, American robin\, common grackle\, Northern ca
 rdinal\, European starling\, and a few others.\n\nSeveral samples have been
  sent to IN ADDL. Gillet said that all bird samples submitted have tested n
 egative for avian influenza and West Nile virus. Final laboratory diagnosti
 c results are pending.\n\nThe following recommendations are good practice f
 or anyone who experiences sick or dead wild birds on their property:\n\n•  
   Use the DNR sick/dead wildlife reporting tool at on.IN.gov/sickwildlife t
 o alert DNR staff.\n•    Stop feeding birds until the mortality event has c
 oncluded.\n•    Clean feeders and baths with a 10% bleach solution.\n•    A
 void handling birds. If you need to handle birds\, wear disposable gloves. 
 \n•    When removing dead birds\, wear disposable gloves and place birds an
 d gloves in a sealable plastic bag to dispose with household trash. \n•    
 Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a precaution.\n\nAdditional infor
 mation will be shared when final diagnostic results are received.
