Drinking water utility is Indiana’s newest “Hoosier Water Guardian”

Indiana American Water-Seymour Operations has been recognized as an Indiana Hoosier Water Guardian for highly effective efforts to prevent contaminants in its wells. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) presented the utility with a certificate during a ceremony at the Indiana Section Annual American Water Works Association (AWWA) Conference, held February 13 and 14, in Indianapolis.

“Protecting drinking water at the source reduces costs for consumers and contributes to a healthier environment for everyone,” said Pat Carroll, chief of the Drinking Water Branch in IDEM’s Office of Water Quality. “IDEM welcomes Indiana American Water-Seymour Operations as Indiana’s newest Hoosier Water Guardian.”

Community water systems have wellhead protection programs to identify existing and potential sources of contaminants to wells, minimize the potential for negative impacts to wells, develop emergency plans in the event of contamination, and raise awareness in the community. Hoosier Water Guardians voluntarily go above and beyond the basic measures of a wellhead protection program, with an emphasis on increased public awareness, community participation, planning, and pollution prevention.

Organizations such as the Indiana Section of the American Water Works Association, local watershed groups, solid waste management districts, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources work in partnership with IDEM and communities to help ensure the implementation of effective wellhead protection programs. Indiana American Water-Seymour Operations joins 22 other Indiana communities that have received Hoosier Water Guardian awards since 2007.

Additional information about wellhead protection and the Hoosier Water Guardian program can be found at www.idem.IN.gov/4289.htm.
