“Indiana University Northwest” State Historical Marker To Be Dedicated

A public dedication ceremony for a new Indiana state historical marker commemorating the history of Indiana University Northwest is scheduled for Thursday, June 16th. The marker will be dedicated at 4:30 pm (CDT) near the southeast corner of the Anderson Library Conference Center at 3400 Broadway, Gary, Indiana 46408.

The text follows for the state marker entitled “Indiana University Northwest:”

By 1921, Indiana University offered courses in Lake County, later establishing extension centers in the Calumet Region. As manufacturing jobs in the area drew Black Americans from the South and European and Latino immigrants, IU offered affordable night classes and industrial coursework to meet the educational needs of a diverse student body. A new Gary Center building opened in 1959, which became the campus's current site. In 1963, the Gary Center and Calumet Center merged as the Northwest Campus of IU. In 1967, the school held its first commencement ceremony. Part of a 1968 statewide reorganization, it was renamed Indiana University Northwest. IU School of Medicine added a regional center here in 1972.

The public is invited to attend the unveiling of this marker, which join a series of others installed in recent years for Indiana University’s regional campuses, including IU East in Richmond (dedicated in 2019), IU South Bend (dedicated in 2020), IU Kokomo, and IU Southeast (both dedicated in April 2022). State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For over 100 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, a division of the Indiana State Library, has been marking Indiana history. Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. Over 700 of these markers have been installed over the years.
