The text follows for the state marker entitled “State Police Jasper Post”:

Increased crime during the Great Depression demanded an expanded police presence and faster communication technology. In response, the Motor Vehicle Police (established 1921) was reorganized as the Indiana State Police in 1933. The new division investigated crimes, patrolled roadways, and responded to emergencies across the state. By 1935, more posts were needed. The Works Progress Administration helped build modern State Police facilities and a network of radio towers in strategic locations across the state. The improved technology and coverage helped troopers coordinate efforts, respond quickly, and decrease crime. The WPA completed the State Police Jasper Post (No. 8) in 1938, which served fourteen surrounding counties.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for this historical marker that examines the origins of the Indiana State Police and the establishment of centralized posts across the state, including the one at Jasper, still in operation today. These WPA-built posts helped ensure troopers in the far reaches of Indiana would have the amenities needed to perform their duties and serve the public. 2021 marks the centennial year of the Indiana Motor Vehicle Police, the predecessor of the Indiana State Police. Speakers at the dedication will include Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter.

State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For over 100 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, a division of the Indiana State Library, has been marking Indiana history. Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. Over 700 of these markers have been installed over the years.
