New video visitation option connects inmates, loved ones

Indianapolis, IN — A new video‑visitation service expands opportunities for inmates to connect with their loved ones — an approach expected to strengthen community ties and reduce recidivism.

VisitAnywhere, a new app launched across Indiana Department of Correction facilities, allows inmates to take part in virtual visitation on their state‑issued tablets. The service supplements in-person visitation and improves access for those who are unable to travel to a facility.

“Keeping inmates in contact with their families on the outside is critical,” Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said. “Most of these men and women will go home one day, and they need a strong support system to make that transition successfully.”

Research has long shown that maintaining personal relationships while incarcerated reduces the likelihood an inmate will reoffend after release. That evidence includes a 2020 Minnesota Department of Corrections study that found people who engaged in video calls were less likely to commit a new felony after release.

“We encourage those ongoing connections with family, friends, and loved ones,” IDOC Commissioner Lloyd Arnold said. “That’s only going to benefit them in the long run.”

Inmates can connect with those on their approved visitation list during designated call times set by the facility. As with all correspondence, calls are recorded and monitored for public safety and security.

The department does not receive a commission from the video calls.
