Indiana Launches Veterinary Practice Finder Online Search Tool

Helping Animal Owners Find Veterinary Care

INDIANAPOLIS (10 March 2026)—A frequently asked question to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is:  “Can you direct me to a veterinarian accepting new clients?”

Whether the question comes from a sheep farmer in rural Southern Indiana or a cat owner living in the suburbs, many Hoosier animal owners are struggling to find veterinary services for their livestock and pets. The need has never been greater.

Animal agriculture in Indiana continues to thrive and expand statewide, increasing demand for large-animal veterinarians. Meanwhile, Hoosiers added pets to their households in record numbers during the last 5 years.

To help match Hoosiers seeking veterinary care with veterinary practices accepting new clients, the Indiana Center for Animal Policy (IN-CAP) has launched the Indiana veterinary practice finder, Find-A-Vet. The ad-free online portal allows users to search for veterinary services by species, location, specialty, and how services are delivered (in-clinic, on-site or haul-in facility).

“We know the search tool will not solve all the shortfalls we hear about,” said Indiana State Veterinarian Kyle Shipman, DVM. “Our goal is to help where we can to match up veterinary practices with capacity for new clients with those who need their services. Many times smaller clinics are not well known outside their immediate communities, so an animal owner may not be aware that a veterinarian is available in the next town or county away.”

Information in Find-A-Vet is provided by Indiana-licensed practices that voluntarily opt-in and are accepting new clients. Veterinary practices do not pay for the service, nor do the clients.

“More than 200 practices registered with Find-A-Vet, and we continue to reach out to our veterinary colleagues, encouraging them to join as we expand this service,” said Dr. Shipman.

The veterinary practice finder is available now, online:

Updates to the portal, including new practice listings, will be added quarterly.
