Public Information Basics, K-12 Crisis Communication

When a school-related crisis happens, the importance of communication cannot be overstated. Delivering the right information at the right time can save lives.

Public Information Basics provides a foundation for crisis communication in a school setting, including: working with the media, interview skills, holding a news conference, selecting communication channels for specific audiences, constructing effective warning messages, using social media and writing news releases.

The course provides guidance and tips for working with a public information officer (PIO) or communication director before, during and after a crisis. For the School Safety Specialist who does not have a PIO on staff, Public Information Basics offers tools and techniques to survive the inevitable media interactions that can follow an incident.

HOURS: Start time on July  23 & 24 - 8:00 a.m. EST; End time all three day - 4:30 p.m. EST

LOCATION & REPORTING INSTRUCTIONS:  Indiana Government Center South, 302 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204.  

Enter the PUBLIC ENTRANCE OFF OF N. SENATE STREET to the Government Center South and go through Security.  Proceed down hallway to the Reception Desk. Enter the Atrium area and there are signs for Conference Room C.

RESOURCES REQUIRED:  

Sending the course materials out to registrants ahead of the class with the guidance that they can either print their own hard copy or bring a device if they want to follow along that way.
