Northlake Auto Recyclers, Inc. Recognized for Environmental Stewardship

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) presented Northlake Auto Recyclers, Inc., located at 105 Industrial Road, Hammond, Ind., with its ninth Indiana Clean Yard-Gold Level award in recognition of the company’s efforts to protect the environment.

IDEM Senior Environmental Engineer Hani Sharaya with IDEM's Compliance & Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) with IDEM Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance Manager Julie Rhodes, presented a commemorative certificate to Northlake Auto Recyclers, Inc. owner Marty Hollingshead.

This year, Northlake Auto Recyclers, Inc. also has the distinguished accomplishment of being the only facility to earn 100% on its Indiana Clean Yard inspection. Mr. Hollingshead has been instrumental in working with the auto recycling industry and IDEM to recommend enhancements that promote the growth of Clean Yard program and encourage high standards for environmental stewardship within the industry.

Salvage yards receive and store wrecked vehicles containing antifreeze, gasoline, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, batteries, mercury switches, and tires. If not managed properly, wrecked vehicles stockpiled in salvage yards can pose an environmental threat. IDEM is committed to helping auto salvage recyclers ensure environmental protection.

IDEM has partnered with Automotive Recyclers of Indiana (ARI) to develop the "Indiana Clean Yard" recognition program to reward auto salvage yard operators who meet two different levels of requirements: “Indiana Clean Yard” and “Indiana Clean Yard – Gold Level.”

All Hoosier businesses, including auto salvage recyclers, can obtain free, confidential compliance assistance and request confidential site visits by contacting IDEM’s Office of Compliance and Technical Assistance (CTAP) at 800-988-7901 or by visiting the CTAP website at idem.IN.gov/ctap.
