The Salt Creek Valley area includes land that is now a part of Monroe Lake, Brown County State Park, the Hoosier National Forest, and Yellowwood and Morgan Monroe State Forests. This event celebrates the pre-1960 history of this region, with a variety of programs that include guided hikes/tours, lectures, and kids activities.

Programs are hosted by Monroe Lake and Brown County State Park and take place at a variety of locations, which are noted in the descriptions below.

Corn Husk Dolls from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

DROP BY to make a corn husk doll, similar to ones that pioneer children used to make, and learn about this toy’s origin story.

Hoosier Bridges Walk at 11:00 a.m.
BROWN COUNTY STATE PARK: Meet in front of the Swimming Pool
This presentation will address the history of bridge construction and use in Indiana. From covered bridges to modern highway bridges, this particular type of infrastructure is essential for transportation in the Hoosier State. Myriad creeks, streams, and rivers showcase the importance of Indiana bridges. The program consists of a short walk.

CCC History Hike at 2:00 p.m.
BROWN COUNTY STATE PARK: Meet in front of Abe Martin Lodge
Join a park naturalist for a guided hike of Trail 2, which features several unique structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Learn about the origin and purpose of the CCC and how they helped build the Indiana State Parks we all enjoy even today! The moderate-rated trail is 2 miles and includes uneven surfaces, staircases, slopes, and possible muddy spots. 1.5 hours
